The International Abalone Society (IAS) is an international forum, intended to promote research on abalone; facilitate the distribution of information on abalone; promote cooperation between abalone researchers and members of the abalone industry; and to recognise the achievements of individuals and organisations by the award of IAS International awards.

International Abalone Symposiums are held about every three years. The first symposium was held in Mexico (1989), followed by Australia (1994), U.S.A. (1997), South Africa (2000), China (2003), Chile (2006), Thailand (2009), Tasmania (2012), Korea (2015), China (2018) and now for the first time, New Zealand (2023).

We are honoured to be hosting the 11th International Abalone Symposium (Abalone), for the first time in Aotearoa, New Zealand, in partnership with the International Abalone Society (IAS) and Events at AUT, from 27 February – 2 March 2023. This symposium is themed “Poua te mana o Paua ki te tai, kia whakaika te moana!” and will focus on fisheries management, physiology and ecology, aquaculture technology, processing, and the marketing of abalone. As a first-time addition, a strong stream of cultural and indigenous knowledge will be added along with scientific, industrial, and networking sessions, to ensure a special and memorable symposium in New Zealand.
